This year’s Skate with the Lightning Program has been an exceptional experience for our students and school community. From the beginning of the season, Chaleur Lightning players visited classrooms to read with students, participate in lessons and activities, and build meaningful relationships. Their consistent presence made them valued role models and familiar figures throughout the school.
A major highlight of the program took place at the KC Irving Arena, where every class had the opportunity to skate alongside Lightning players. With the support of the City of / Ville de Bathurst and the organization of Mrs. Keith, this event offered students a chance to build confidence, strengthen their skills, and enjoy a unique, community-connected learning experience.
To express our appreciation for the players’ contribution to our school, we hosted a special celebration. One student from each class joined several Lightning players for a pizza lunch, followed by a friendly floor hockey game that brought together students and players in a fun and spirited way.
The celebration concluded with a school-wide assembly. During the assembly, one of our Grade 2 students shared a personal writing piece inspired by her experience skating with the team, highlighting the meaningful impact the program has had on student learning and creativity. Students also taught the players our HERO chant, and the team was formally named Honorary School Heroes. Jack, Jameson, Will, Mason, and Easton were each presented with a Hero Cape, and the Lightning’s names were added to our Hero Wall in recognition of the leadership, kindness, and community spirit they have shown throughout the year.
The Skate with the Lightning Program has strengthened connections, supported student growth, and created lasting memories. We are deeply grateful for the time, energy, and heart the Lightning players have invested in our school, and we look forward to continuing to build these community partnerships in the future.
